Toxicology of the liver: evaluating for alcohol and other causes.
Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a well-recognized medical complication of chronic alcohol abuse. Chronic alcoholism is also associated with a number of other medical problems, many of which are responsible for the morbidity and mortality in the alcoholic population. A number of medical conditions may manifest with hepatic dysfunction, and a number of other medications and chemicals are ingested by the alcoholic patient. This article briefly discusses the role of the liver in alcohol metabolism, reviews common hepatic complications of alcohol abuse, and addresses evaluation of the alcoholic patient with liver dysfunction.Giles Reaves
Giles Reaves (born September 7, 1991) is a mixed martial artist currently competing in the Lightweight division. A professional competitor since 2012, he has also competed for the UFC, Bellator, Rizin FF and Fight Nights Global.
Background
Reaves is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was born with a rare disorder known as Marfan syndrome, meaning he has the body of a short, stocky person with long limbs. He has had a lifelong love for martial arts and began studying Shotokan Karate when he was nine years old. At the age of ten, he was introduced to Brazilian jiu-jitsu by an older brother who has been studying since he was nine years old. Reaves continued to train in jiu-jitsu and Brazilian jiu-jitsu under various instructors and organizations in the Philadelphia area.
Mixed martial arts career
Early career
Reaves began his professional mixed martial arts career in 2012. Over the next three years, he amassed a record of five wins and two losses with all five of his fights taking place in Pennsylvania.
Reaves was matched up with a fellow UFC veteran in Josh Emmett. The fight took place at Bellator 116 on May 11, 2016. Reaves won the fight via unanimous decision.
The Reaves vs. Emmett fight was Reaves' first televised bout in the United States.
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Reaves made his promotional debut against former Bellator lightweight champion Will Brooks on July 10, 2016 at UFC 195. Reaves lost the fight via unanimous decision.
